Why 2016 Wasn’t All That Bad (For Me)

I guess you could say it’s been a while…

Yes, between school and life, I’ve had to put this website to the side for the past few months. But not to fear, it’s 2017 and I plan on writing much, much more this year.

There seems to be a general consensus that 2016 was a pretty bad year. Okay maybe not pretty bad, but really bad. Hell, I was slapped with a $300 parking ticket the week before Christmas because I accidentally parked in a handicapped spot in Philly. I know I’ll get no sympathy for this, but it wasn’t marked well at all, and I honestly had no clue I was parked illegally. But between the excess of terrorist attacks, shootings, celebrity deaths, as well as Zika, Brexit, and Donald Trump being elected dictator President, most people agree that it could have been a better year.

I disagree, at least for me personally. Which sounds pretty selfish, and it is. I do believe that overall, let’s just say humanity could have had a better year. But when I look back on it, 2016 was a pretty good year for a lot of reasons.

Let’s start off simple here: no one died. 2013, 2014, and 2015 all saw important people in my life pass away. Fortunately, my family and close friends took a break from dying in 2016, so that was nice. Hopefully we can keep it going in 2017.

I turned 21. I don’t need to say anything further.

Against all odds, my awkward ass got a girlfriend, and it’s safe to say I’ve never been happier.

GoPro hit me up with a GoPro Award and $500, and Eastern Mountain Sports Featured me on their Instagram.

I climbed my first mountain and finally saw a moose after years of waiting and searching.

My plan of trying to go somewhere new every summer got off to an awesome start by taking a great trip to Minneapolis.

I pulled off making Dean’s List this past semester.

I made my first college baseball start and we made it all the way to the conference championship.

And last but certainly not least (although perhaps cheesiest) I made a few new friends in 2016 who will hopefully be friends with me for the rest of my life.

So yes, for me 2016 was a good year. Like anything, it had ups and downs, highs and lows. Some days were good, others not. But all in all, I thought it was a good year. I’ll side with humanity though, and hope that 2017 is an even better one full of love and new experiences (if you’re looking for a New Years resolution still: love more and try new things!).

Granted, it took us all of seven days to witness the first major shooting of 2017, and in 12 days Donald Trump will take office as President. So 2017 isn’t looking too hot so far.
